Carlsbad, NM 4-11-19

Pretty view on the way to Carlsbad from El Paso.
The salt flats that were the cause of the Salt Flat War, the only time in history that the Texas Rangers met defeat (at San Elizario).

Our main purpose in coming here for a couple of days was to see the Carlsbad Caverns. Below are some pics of the road leading to the National Park.

We walked The Natural Entrance down to the Big Room. The descent was an hour trek, about a mile. It was mostly downhill at up to 20% grade. It was also pretty dark in some places so Dave kept the phone’s flashlight on, to make me feel more stable.

My kids will attest to the fact that I have more fears and phobias than I should have. I was nervous about making this trek but Dave really wanted to. Plus, I knew I would regret it if we missed it.

Below are many pictures of the walk down and then of the Big Room, another 1 1/2 hour hike but on fairly level ground. This was such an awesome adventure and photos do not do it justice but will serve to remind us of our trip.

Easy out! An hour down would have been three hours back so we took the elevator back up — in one minute!

After leaving the Caverns, we found a local Brew Pub. The fun part was that there were two other full time RVers there and another couple RVing part time with plans to go full time in the future. One couple is parked in our camp ground. Another couple came in and it was funny; they had been in the elevator with us at the Caverns.

For two days after our hike into the caverns, Dave and I experienced aches and pains. My calves hurt so much it was painful to walk. On the other hand, Dave’s shins hurt. One of us must have been walking backwards…!
